MPs bemoan lack of adequate security for students in hostels

Members of Parliament have bemoaned the lack of adequate security for students living in hostels at the various university campuses.

According to the Legislators very little attention is currently given to the security and safety of students living in the private hostels by university authorities and management of hostel facilities.

The MPs were contributing to a statement made by MP for Afigya Sekyere East, David Hennric Yeboah on the insecurity of students living in hostels on various university campuses.

He said as part of the safety and security policy document by the  universities for students the policy should border on sexual harassment, possession of weapons and possession of illegal drugs among others.

There have been several instances where students in private hostels have been attacked by armed robbers while some female students have fallen victim to rapists.

Hon. Hennric Yeboah stated that access to private hostels should be restricted to residents, their approved guests and other approved members of the university community.
He noted that to ensure this all private hostels must be made to establish Porter's lodge as it is done in the traditional halls of residence in universities.

Hon. Yeboah added that the university security system must establish itself by posting personel to the private hostels.

Adding his voice to the issue, MP for Asante Akim Central, Kwame Anyimadu Antwi stated that government with the enough land that it possesses should ensure that enough halls of residences are built to reduce the dependence on the private hostels some of whose security cannot be guaranteed.

On his part, MP for Amenfi Central, George Kofi Arthur stated that the inability of some management of private hostels to do due deligence on persons they employ has added
up to the insecurity of the students.

He said other student have adopted the habit of accommodating their relations who are not students in the hostels, adding that they admit such persons without the person reporting himself to the porters in charge.

Hon.  Arthur added that if this attitude is not checked the lives of students living in such hostels will continue to be in danger.
