Parliament can’t work without Committee System”--- Dr. Avedzi

Deputy Minority Leader, Dr. James Kluste Avedzi has said without the Committee system in Parliament the institution cannot work.

Mr Avedzi gave the disclosure at an engagement of expanded leadership of Parliament on the theme, “The committee system in Ghana’s Parliament an assessment”.

Speaking on behalf of the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddriss at the engagement organised by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, he underscored the need for the Committees to be well resourced to undertake its functions.

He said the powers of the committees are derived from Article 103 of the constitution, and questioned if they are enough to allow the Committees to on their own initiate investigations without referrals from the Speaker?

More especially on issues that come into the public domain, and again pointed out that the committees do not have enough time to analyze work before them looking at the volumes of work because the committees work should benefit the Ghanaian citizens.

He further gave an example of a situation on the floor of the House when he drew the attention of the Majority Leader Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to the fact that the few members who availed themselves at the willowing time are the same people who do the proper legislative work when it comes to crafting of laws being looked at on the floor.
